The noise problem associated with an aircraft flying at supersonic speeds is shown to depend primarily on the shock wave pattern formed by the aircraft. Quasiparticle relaxation in optically excited high-Q superconducting resonators
The quasiparticle relaxation time in superconducting films has been measured
as a function of temperature using the response of the complex conductivity to
photon flux. For tantalum and aluminium, chosen for their difference in
electron-phonon coupling strength, we find that at high temperatures the
relaxation time increases with decreasing temperature, as expected for
electron-phonon interaction. At low temperatures we find in both
superconducting materials a saturation of the relaxation time, suggesting the
presence of a second relaxation channel not due to electron-phonon interaction.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Redox-sensitive probes for the measurement of redox chemistries within phagosomes of macrophages and dendritic cells
AbstractThere is currently much interest in factors that affect redox chemistries within phagosomes of macrophages and dendritic cells. In addition to the antimicrobial role of reactive oxygen species generation within phagosomes, accumulating evidence suggests that phagosomal redox chemistries influence other phagosomal functions such as macromolecular degradation and antigen processing. Whilst the redox chemistries within many sub-cellular compartments are being heavily scrutinized with the increasing use of fluorescent probe technologies, there is a paucity of tools to assess redox conditions within phagosomes. Hence the systems that control redox homeostasis in these unique environments remain poorly defined. This review highlights current redox-sensitive probes that can measure oxidative or reductive activity in phagosomes and discusses their suitability and limitations of use. Probes that are easily targeted to the phagosome by using established approaches are emphasized
Discovering conversational topics and emotions associated with Demonetization tweets in India
Social media platforms contain great wealth of information which provides us
opportunities explore hidden patterns or unknown correlations, and understand
people's satisfaction with what they are discussing. As one showcase, in this
paper, we summarize the data set of Twitter messages related to recent
demonetization of all Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes in India and explore insights
from Twitter's data. Our proposed system automatically extracts the popular
latent topics in conversations regarding demonetization discussed in Twitter
via the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) based topic model and also identifies
the correlated topics across different categories. Additionally, it also
discovers people's opinions expressed through their tweets related to the event
under consideration via the emotion analyzer. The system also employs an
intuitive and informative visualization to show the uncovered insight.
Furthermore, we use an evaluation measure, Normalized Mutual Information (NMI),
to select the best LDA models. The obtained LDA results show that the tool can
be effectively used to extract discussion topics and summarize them for further

Ranking and clustering of nodes in networks with smart teleportation
Random teleportation is a necessary evil for ranking and clustering directed
networks based on random walks. Teleportation enables ergodic solutions, but
the solutions must necessarily depend on the exact implementation and
parametrization of the teleportation. For example, in the commonly used
PageRank algorithm, the teleportation rate must trade off a heavily biased
solution with a uniform solution. Here we show that teleportation to links
rather than nodes enables a much smoother trade-off and effectively more robust
results. We also show that, by not recording the teleportation steps of the
random walker, we can further reduce the effect of teleportation with dramatic

Prediction of transonic flutter for a supercritical wing by modified strip analysis and comparison with experiment
Use of a supercritical airfoil can adversely affect wing flutter speeds in the transonic range. As adequate theories for three dimensional unsteady transonic flow are not yet available, the modified strip analysis was used to predict the transonic flutter boundary for the supercritical wing. The steady state spanwise distributions of section lift curve slope and aerodynamic center, required as input for the flutter calculations, were obtained from pressure distributions. The calculated flutter boundary is in agreement with experiment in the subsonic range. In the transonic range, a transonic bucket is calculated which closely resembles the experimental one with regard to both shape and depth, but it occurs at about 0.04 Mach number lower than the experimental one

We thank Chemouny et al for their letter and concur with their conclusions. As we state (1): “A positive biopsy for AAV is helpful when considering an initial diagnosis or recurrent disease.” In our view, renal biopsy is important to establish diagnosis and may also provide an indication of prognostic trajectory and although existing classification systems need further validation, changes like glomerular sclerosis have obvious adverse prognostic value for patients with AAV (2-4). The Delphi process, for the scope of the current recommendations, identified the role of biopsy at both diagnosis and follow-up as an important item for update. Histopathological evidence of vasculitis, such as pauci-immune glomerulonephritis or necrotising vasculitis in any organ, remains the gold standard for diagnostic purposes. The likely diagnostic yield varies and is dependent on the organ targeted and in patients with GPA with renal involvement can be as high as 91.5% from renal biopsy (5). As Chemouny and colleagues have demonstrated, a renal biopsy was definitive in determining their management decisions. However during follow-up when relapses occur, it may be prudent to consider judicious use of further kidney biopsy during suspected renal relapse since the cause for acute kidney injury may be due to another cause other than AAV (6).
